I detest finding a wonderful quote that can really come in handy — except for a typo that sticks out like a sore thumb and loses the message. I stand with the original replier. It takes a lot of meaning out of the picture if the writer couldn’t even glance at it twice to look for errors.
I agree with Adam, but not with Barbara. How would you know if the writer didn’t double check? Could it be that is how the writer thought it was spelled. That part you said about taking out meaning, that’s just your problem and maybe a couple others, didn’t bother me at all.
You are all missing a big piece. Prophet Muhammad never said that. Even if he had, the direct opposite of the quote has always been true. But Guesty and Adam are right. Spelling is important.
Actually, that's not how YOU spell martyr. Different areas of the world use different spellings. Europe and Middle East as well as many Asian countries spell tire, "tyre". Different cultures, different languages, different spellings.
Seems like it might be spelled correctly… http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_meaning_of_… - What is the meaning of the word matyr? ANS: a person who represents their beliefs that sacrifices their lives for death http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ma… 1) matyr A matyr is someone who dies in aid of a cause. how interesting that the Hemingway quote about writing being truer than what happenend is clever , as it is posted on a picture reminiscent of the cover of "A Million Little Pieces". That author really caught hell for writing less than truthful memories…
Yeah, I think that was done on purpose. I was quite upset when I found out that a majority of those stories were fabricated. Also, the picture isn't reminiscent of, the picture IS the cover of 'A Million Little Pieces'
You put a line from a movie with a picture of Chris Rock, implying he said it. (Yes, I saw the little, tiny disclaimer) The quote is from the mind of Kevin Smith. Why is that not pointed out in big letters? If you want to quote Rock, he only has several hours of stand up with really awesome points of view!!!!
I thought the same this but was too lazy to find the words to express it. I'm thinking, his character said it, not him, so credit goes to the writer but then i was like blah blah i havent had coffee yet so why bother, someone else will say it ….. and looky here. good job.
Who ever compiled these quotes did it over and over again and inconsistently: quoting Rocky? That’s a character, not an actor reading someone else’s lines! Same with “Red.” Arg!!!
Interestingly, Red was quoted as saying the line from the Shawshank Redemption (although that's based in truth, so perhaps someone named Red really did say that?) and Jay was quoted as saying his line form Modern Family, although Jay is also fiction (same for Rocky Balboa, and perhaps others). I think the best action, for consistency, would be to name Rufus as the speaker of the quote.
Yeah, it's actually how civilization came about and managed to progress for 10,000 years. A century in, feminism has created the dual-income working poor, the single parent family as the average, and political correctness – the murder of language and independant thought. Any good female quote would start with "a man once told me…."
How civilisation came about? That makes no sense, Asif, without women. If you want an all male civilisation it won't last very long. Maybe if your mother taught you more about the importance of women you wouldn't be writing such nonsensical and offensive rubbish. How can you lament the "murder of language" and blame it on women when you have misspelt "independent"?
Ad Hominem arguments… tsk tsk tsk. A simple spelling mistake does not constitute the murder of language, but the invention of politically correct terminology, 'buzz words' and the like which truly have no meaning and are empty. Now, whether women are the instigators of these foul creations is another matter. Regardless, I suggest you stick to making sandwiches.
u see that is where feminism fails… the writer point of view is these r their own personal favorite quotes how on earth can u simply assume that this is the work of a man? let alone simply because they have something against women they didnt quote any? no u r the down fall of man… u r the new bigot and ppl will see how dumb feminists are sooner then u think. now im not saying the women r dumb, no just the feminists
So, in your mind men are above women for a reason? Women should get credit for nothing?
"A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture, and transform." — Diane Mariechild, author of "Mother of Wit"
"To me success means effectiveness in the world, that I am able to carry my ideas and values into the world–that I am able to change it in positive ways." — Maxine Hong Kingston, author of "Woman Warrior"
"I rejected the notion that my race or sex would bar my success in life." — Constance Baker Motley, first African-American woman to serve as a federal judge
"One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion." — Simone de Beauvoir, author of "The Second Sex"
"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." This is so true. Is it sad that the United States government is the first thing I thought of when I read this? People keep complaining about how our economy is a piece of shit, but we keep trying to do everything the old-fashioned way and no one has the balls to try something new.
There is nothing old fashioned about how our government is handling the economy. Our government has been borrowing and spending unreasonably for about 25-30 years now. An argument can be made that even Reagan did it a little too in defense spending. I think Clintons' second term is the exception in the last 30 years.
maybe because, for many, art is almost a child to them. you must cultivate your art and mold it into something both pleasing to you and your intention and (possibly) pleasing too others. It sometimes can consume your whole life, perhaps not allowing the opportunity or even the want to produce or raise children. think out of the box, free your mind, the author obviously had some intention.
Also, most parents I have met present their children as the best thing they've ever done in their life. I can't see how there would be time enough for both child rearing and effective art. Would have to be a super hero.
"it saddens me that many ppl will never know the greatness of most quotes, its one thing to resit them its another to understand they were uttered" me about 12:50 thursday 17th of may 2012 lol
The quote attributed to Dr. Seuss was actually written by Robert Fulghum in "True Love." The correct quote is: "We're all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness — and call it love — true love."
in reply to the mandela quote, if one chooses to define poverty as having a lack of material possessions then cool, but if, like me, you define poverty as lacking the means to live, to simply survive, then he's wrong. man didn't create the need for food, or the need to keep warm and dry.
OK — 30 quotes and NONE of them are quotes by women? I'm not sure whats more troubling– the fact that the editor has failed 30 times to include a female voice, or that fact that no one else besides me seems to notice this!
hahahahaha! too funny! and on your way to making a cake, learn to use a freaking search engine….# 26, solbeam, is a chick……dont be so damn sensitive…….you don't see me complaining that hooters only hires women!
I enjoyed the quotations very much so, thanks for the inspiration. However, every single person in the comments section used “quote” wrong. Quote is a verb = to quote someone. Quotation is a noun. So before you go correcting others on your spelling, check your own.
#7 is stupid and Teju Cole needs to think about it more. The FWP meme doesn't really label any particular country or people as third world. It labels problems as being from the first world. FWP does not label people, only problems, Teju labels people.
Generally I relish the opportunity to stumble onto these sites, the ones with the photos and the quotes, that is, for the sole sake of hating them and writing long polemics about how much useless noise and boilerplate garbage they feel the need to reciprocate. But you, sir, have earned my ire in finally producing something worthwhile. I cannot help but begrudgingly praise your effort. Good quotes, good flow, good breaks. I appreciate the existential, the humor, and the downright irreverent culminating in a somewhat presentable photo page. Well done.
Seems to some of these quotes like "Poverty is not an accident" from Nelson Mandela should be classified as practical truisms that should e written into the constitution with an action plan that says poverty will be eradicated rather than just being seen as a piece of philosophy.
i cant explain why but the second i read number 14 my heart stopped and i started to cry. I read that quote at the exact time i needed to. I dont know what it means to me now, but i know i needed to read that quote.
This is an amazing collection of quotes, even though some of them are very very deep, but I liked the one about the smokers by Rory Sutherland, it’s a bit silly and sarcastic but at the same time it’s very true… Maybe I am in that silly, sarcastic and realistic mood..
Why there is quote of Gandhi, he doesn’t deserve to be in the list. He was a total hypocrite. You know only the outer appearance of him. Well any ways other quotes were pretty good
Thank you.
thats not how you spell Martyr
of all the things you could have commented about, you chose to correct the spelling of a word.
Guesty left a precise and constructive comment. Spelling is fundamental in building ethos.
I detest finding a wonderful quote that can really come in handy — except for a typo that sticks out like a sore thumb and loses the message. I stand with the original replier. It takes a lot of meaning out of the picture if the writer couldn’t even glance at it twice to look for errors.

If they didnt I would have!!!! Some one had to!
thought the same thing the whole way through
People in glass houses…
"That's" = That is
"Thats" = mistake
Guess it could happen to anyone huh?!?!
Permit me to throw a stone of my own.
The phrase:
“Guess it could happen to anyone huh”
really needs a comma between ‘anyone’ and ‘huh’.
If this omission was, in fact, intentional then I have great respect for your employment of a very covert, grammatical irony.
Hahahaha. I fucking screamed when I saw that in there.
You are all missing a big piece. Prophet Muhammad never said that. Even if he had, the direct opposite of the quote has always been true. But Guesty and Adam are right. Spelling is important.
What??? WHAT??? My goodness me you arrogant brainwashed ignorant pratt.
that's not how you spell that's
Actually, that's not how YOU spell martyr. Different areas of the world use different spellings. Europe and Middle East as well as many Asian countries spell tire, "tyre". Different cultures, different languages, different spellings.
Like I always say….. if you want someone to read something, misspell a word.
Or include too many dots in your ellipsis….
Seems like it might be spelled correctly…

- What is the meaning of the word matyr?
ANS: a person who represents their beliefs that sacrifices their lives for death
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ma…
1) matyr
A matyr is someone who dies in aid of a cause.
Suicide bombers are matyrs for terrorists.
- matyr matry death dying cause

If nothing else, it definitely is an example of irony.
Great collection of quotes!
Im with scrobious pip on this one. still read them all of course. half baked potatoes
This was amazing.
Awesome quotes
Jst awesome

Are you referring to the wonderful Mr. Uncle Rufus? lol
The Shawshank redemption wasn’t based in truth. It was a fictional story by Stephen King.
Written by Frank Darabount, adapted from a Stephen King story.
great stuff
Why 30?
why not?
Great quotes. But i must say Tyler Durden should have had his place among the 30 best quotes
.
You mean Chuck Palahniuk.
All are very thoughtful. Thanks For sharing
For # 2, I think he meant "asocial", not antisocial…
Except that >1% of the population probably knows the difference. Most think "antisocial" means introverted, not Hannibal Lecter.
Except that ">" means greater than, not less than.
i agree
nice
Many profound quotes indeed but not 1 out of 30 is a quote by a female.. are you kidding? Patriarchy=downfall of humankind
Yeah, it's actually how civilization came about and managed to progress for 10,000 years. Citations or it didn't happen.
Maybe woman, because of unknown cause ('x'), don't have many words of wisdom.

Get back in the kitchen.
no patriarchy = winning…. how many women CEO's are their….. im waiting…. 5. Which is 5 to many

In order to communicate your point effectively, you should insert a comma after "no".
If you're going to present yourself as a chauvinist, at least present yourself as an educated one.
So, in your mind men are above women for a reason? Women should get credit for nothing?

Diane, Maxine, Constance, Simone; what's your point?
This made my day
thank you!
"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

Excellent!!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, I have had a hard day, and some of these quotes have really got me through. Thanks!!!!
wassup baby
um…. you spelled martyr wrong…. so much for the ink of a scholar.
Stunning collection. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks
#26 confuses me when it says make babies or make art. All of the others have a duality to it, what's special about this one?
maybe because, for many, art is almost a child to them. you must cultivate your art and mold it into something both pleasing to you and your intention and (possibly) pleasing too others. It sometimes can consume your whole life, perhaps not allowing the opportunity or even the want to produce or raise children. think out of the box, free your mind, the author obviously had some intention.
Very true, Col. Very true. I was wondering the same thing as Jay, and you just cleared it up in my mind for me.
Also, most parents I have met present their children as the best thing they've ever done in their life. I can't see how there would be time enough for both child rearing and effective art. Would have to be a super hero.
That was much needed.
So many great quotes yet not one from Carl Sagan.
Some of these quotes were phucking awful
Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what you can't do and why. Then do it.
That was Heinlen
nicely done…!!

Jay. Lol ur obviously doing it wrong.
I'm glad someone caught that.
nice quotes , thank you .
I love taking in the pearls of mental-emotional struggle, those quotes im sure came so easily but didnt. : )
I love Dr. Seuss!
Jay – #26 as a whole just means what ever you do, no matter what it is, good or bad, Enjoy the Ride.
in reply to the mandela quote, if one chooses to define poverty as having a lack of material possessions then cool, but if, like me, you define poverty as lacking the means to live, to simply survive, then he's wrong. man didn't create the need for food, or the need to keep warm and dry.

He folks, marter don't matter, we shouldn't martyr a scholar for misspelling an word.
Awesome quotes, everything from Chris Rock to Albert Camut and Buddha and Einstien. Excellent selection of qoutes!
I enjoyed the quotations very much so, thanks for the inspiration. However, every single person in the comments section used “quote” wrong. Quote is a verb = to quote someone. Quotation is a noun. So before you go correcting others on your spelling, check your own.

Great list of quotes. Thanks for sharing. Poverty, in indeed a man-made construct, and can be removed if more people were willing and able.

The Dr. Suess quote is actually by Robert Fulghum in his book "True Love." I don't know how that gets switched everywhere.
Thank you for sharing! Love this list!
Many of these were super inspiring

Why the fuck does Tyler the creator have a quote in between Mahatma Gandhi and Aristotle????? WHO WOULD DO THAT?!? Are you serious?
