Drones deployed for controlling locusts in Rajasthan as Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has permitted the Rajasthan government’s Agriculture Department to use remotely piloted aircraft systems for anti-locust operations in the broad areas where the swarms of insect have landed. The locust attack has affected approximately 90,000 hectares in 20 districts of Rajasthan.

In order, the Ministry said that the conditional exemption to use drones would be limited to equipment deployed by the nodal agency for aerial surveillance, aerial photography, public announcements and an aerial spray of insecticide. Details of the drone flights spraying pesticide will be provided to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Selective Deployment of Drones

The drones will not be flown over for spraying eco-sensitive zones around Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks, according to the order. Moreover, the drone operations will be restricted only to the period between sunrise and sunset. They will also not be used in adverse weather conditions such as heavy winds, rain, dust storms and low visibility.

State Agriculture Commissioner Om Prakash told on Thursday that the deployment of a drone on a trial basis in Jaipur district’s Samod village had proved the utility of the equipment in reaching difficult and inaccessible terrains. “Drones can spray insecticide at the height and in places where regular sprayers cannot reach. They can kill locusts which are perched on high trees these days,” he said.

Dr Prakash said though the drones were not as effective as sprayers, which are usually mounted on tractors and fire tenders, they would be useful as an “additional support” for sprinkling the chemicals on the locust swarms at places like foothills and dunes. A drone can spray pesticide on a nearly 2.5-acre area during a flight of 15 minutes.

Tenders for Drones Facility

The Agriculture Department has been floating tenders for engaging 30 drones for locust control in Rajasthan. Dr Prakash said the insects were landing on trees and foraging on leaves primarily because of lack of vegetation in agricultural fields after the rabi crop harvesting. They are likely to come down when they find greener on the land.

Locust threat is more significant in 2020, warns Agriculture Ministry monitor.

The Agriculture Commissioner said the locust control operations had been carried out in an area measuring 67,000 acres across the State. There was no significant damage to agriculture because of the absence of standing crops, but the cotton crop in 4,000 hectares in Sriganganagar district and 100 hectares in Nagaur has been destroyed.

200 Teams to Survey

Over 800 sprayers-mounted tractors and 50 fire tenders have been pressed into service for locust control. Dr Prakash said that about 200 teams were involved in the daily survey of the affected areas and the farmers were being supplied with high-intensity insecticide-free of cost.

The Government of Delhi has also issued an advisory on preventive measures to control a probable locust attack.

The swarms of tropical grasshoppers, which have been crossing over to Rajasthan from the India-Pakistan border since April 11, have moved towards other areas in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and even reached the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra.

Marut Drones was founded by Prem Kumar Vislawath, Suraj Peddi, and Saikumar Chinthala, IIT Guwahati alumni. The idea takes the help of drones for reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and tackling insect menace on lakes. While they had not anticipated a situation such as COVID-19, they still rose to the occasion to help the needy.

11 districts in Telangana has been disinfected by a Hyderabad-based start-up Marut Drones. They are helping authorities in surveillance too.

A multi-pronged approach is keenly required to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The measures are taken to minimize human contact and protect the police, health workers, sanitation staff, and those working at the front lines. This technology can be of use in such circumstances. In collaboration with authorities in Telangana since March, Marut Drones has employed 19 drones to carry out sanitization and disinfection in 11 districts, including Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Sangareddy and Kamareddy.

Drones possess machine learning, data analytics, Artificial Intelligence AI, and Internet of Things IoT. It can carry approx.10L of disinfectant to cover around 20 km. Till now, the firm has disinfected 1900 km with 9800L of disinfectant.

Marut-Drones

Marut Drones, registered in 2019, was conceptualized at Hyderabad’s T-Hub and mentored by IIIT-Hyderabad and Research and Innovation Circle of Hyderabad. Very recently, the firm was featured in Forbes’ ‘The 30 Under 30 Asia’ list and is among the top 25 trending technologies listed by AGNIi (Accelerating Growth of New India’s Innovations) for fighting against COVID-19.

They had to re-engineer their drones for COVID-19 operations. Drones can now cover large areas in less time. They demonstrated how medical and essential supplies could be delivered to far-flung areas using drones. They are waiting for approval and clearance to be able to start functioning in full fledge.

Telangana hopes to ease lockdown measures in the coming months gradually, the company is planning to increase operations and work with the local authorities for night-time surveillance of various zones by using thermal cameras to spot infection clusters and supply emergency medical attention to the needy.

T-Hub start-ups in COVID-19

ByteForce: developed SafeVision, an AI-based computer vision solution, can be integrated into any CCTV or drone camera to monitor people in public places.
BlueSemi: built a wireless thermal sensor, monitors temperature in a crowd.
Cogni.Care: designed two types of ventilators, do not require an external oxygen cylinder.
Blockapps.ai: surveillance solutions for hotspots using drones.
Exprs: launched #ShieldMyCommunity campaign for gated communities, dedicated delivery executives.
Dimension NXG: large scale thermal scanning glasses.

Marut Drones is very keen to collaborate with like-minded start-ups, which use drones to help the public and private sector in the thermal analysis of crowds. Drones are being retrofitted with cameras to detect high body temperatures in people from a distance.

The Small Beginning

Prem Kumar Vislawath

Prem tells that he had been interested in drones since 2012. In 2016, a personal need arose and made him think of using drones for public health service. His parents live in the outskirts of Hyderabad near to the lake with persistent mosquito menace. They had submitted a complaint to the Panchayat officer about this. The officer returned his letters. As they didn’t have resources to tackle the menace. The municipal staff could spray anti-larval medicines on the lakesides, but they had no access to the more substantial mid-portion of the lake. The thick water hyacinth was also acting as a deterrent. The Panchayat officer asked him if he could think of a solution. Prem could see a solution – using drones that could map the area and efficiently spray the anti-larva medicine over it. It was going to be an automated process with the capacity cover of 25 to 20 acres without human contact.

The firm reached out to RICH to get information about mosquito larvae species that were predominant in which regions of Hyderabad tackle malaria, dengue, filariasis, and chikungunya.

Marut Drones, this year during monsoon, intends to resume its mosquito anti-larvae campaign.

To use drones for seed sowing in a way to increase forest cover is also on the anvil. They have been testing by dispersing seed balls in the Veernapally forest zone of Sircilla. They can sow 15,000 seeds, which will be increased to 1 lakh.

Drone being used for commercial purposes has gotten faster as Amazon has announced that it wants to use drones to deliver to customers.

This is a very transformational idea with many consequences. The future use of drones in healthcare is very thought-provoking.

Industrial use of technology to improve safety and care for delivery purposes is very crucial. Drones have already been trialed to deliver food aid and medical supplies to areas hit by the disaster. The rapid delivery of medications, vaccines, and supplies right to the source could quash outbreaks of life-threatening infectious diseases.

Mobile technology, communication equipment, portable shelter comprise the vast list of what could be delivered immediately to areas where infrastructure damage would prevent ground or air transport. Drones help provide efficient healthcare to patients from a distance through mobile.

Small indoor drones in the future, could deliver medicine to the bedside of a patient from the pharmacy, thus eliminating some human steps. This would lead to a more rapid and less error-prone administration of medications. Pharmacists and nurses can work more efficiently as supplies can be summoned to the bedside instead of the task of gathering necessary items, which is a time-consuming task.

Drones could deliver supplies and medications to patients being cared for in the home instead of in a hospital. The future will see more OPD care units and home-based care without going to a hospital. For post-operative infection-free medication, drone technology may make it easier and safer to provide home-based care. Blood can be immediately sent by drone to the lab to be tested when a provider rounds on a home patient.

Antibiotics, medications, and treatments can be delivered to home care by drones.

Drone technology may allow more people in nursing homes to receive care at home for a more extended period.

A drone may deliver a meal to a needy who cannot prepare his or her meals or keep a check on a patient living at home with dementia.

A drone automated external defibrillator (AED) could fly to the patient in a public space to provide rapid defibrillation for ventricular fibrillation. No longer would a person have obtained AEDs from a specific location that may be challenging to find promptly. The patient could be easily able to summon the AED with the push of a button or smartphone app.

Healthcare organizations are deploying mobile technology to solve problems in the industry today. Remote monitoring, mobile devices, wearable tech, telemedicine, and information-sharing platforms are all transforming healthcare. Drones, artificial intelligence, and robots will assume tasks in healthcare that are performed by humans to reduce cost and error with an increase in precision and variability.

As the is expanding, providing essential health care to communities is no easy task. Medical professionals, emergency responders, third world aid workers, time-stressed staffers in large hospitals…. everyone faces a host of challenges every day. But these problems can be tackled efficiently by unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS to help overcome the obstacles.

Drones make it possible to deliver vaccines, blood, birth control, snakebite serum, and other medical supplies to rural areas. Drones can reach victims. It can be made available to those who need immediate medical attention. In some cases could mean a whole lot of difference between life and death. They can transport medicine within hospital walls and courier blood between hospital buildings. They can give elderly patients tools to support them as they age in place. UAS offers a variety of exciting possibilities to the health care industry, opportunities that help save money as well as precious lives.

Drones will decrease the reliance on human beings hose to provide care and reduce the cost of assisting people. It is a huge benefit for being able to cross long distances at faster speeds to deliver blood products and lab samples. Transporting blood products between hospitals involves vehicles on the ground that are prone to accidents and delays. Drones can help decrease these fatal incidents.

Manufacturers, researchers, and nonprofit organizations are starting to look to UAS to boost efficiencies and improve medical facilities.

Transporting Blood and Medical Supplies

As drones are incorporated into the health care industry, the first area that will see the most benefit is delivery. Extensive research is done in this area, with some countries beginning to benefit from UAS application.

In turn, making sure underserved attendees received the packages—marking the first time a UAS read medical supplies and pharmaceuticals in the U.S.

A group had just begun air ambulance operations to bring medicine and vaccines to parts of the upper Amazon rain forest. Human-crewed fixed-wing helicopters fly to take vaccines, snakebite serum, and other medical supplies to remote villages, a more costly and complicated operation as compared to using UAS.

It would be beneficial if we were able to send packages of medicine and vaccines over significant distances by drones.

During inclement weather, a large number of underserviced people who can’t get out of their houses in severe winter. During the need for blood pressure medicine or whatever medicine, a drone could take that medicine to them where a vehicle due to heavy snow wouldn’t be able to do so.

Drones initially developed for power line inspections, will be able to fly 150 nautical miles with a 55-pound payload. The UAS can withstand harsh weather conditions that would keep human-crewed aircraft grounded and make multiple deliveries throughout the day. The vehicle, as an ideal program, has been started in the Philippines, where they deliver medication across long stretches of water.

Smartphone App

A smartphone app is devised to call the drone during an emergency. As the drone arrives, a medical professional can make a friend or bystander understand how to help the patient by using the defibrillator over a mobile.

If you can make available a drone to a patient with a heart attack quicker than an ambulance, you can save lives. The critical thing about a defibrillator is it doesn’t matter how you use it but how rapidly you can get to the patient for giving care. It’s the time after the event that’s critical.
